The Challenge Function is an organization's internal capacity for questioning, dissent, and debate among its people, a capacity rather than a role or department. Its gradual erosion is one of the surest signs an organization is sliding toward Treadmill, and it usually arrives as a direct result of past success: a leader or team starts believing its own PR and slowly quashes dissent until questioning the boss becomes career suicide. Restoring it means hiring or promoting Visionaries and protecting them from cultural rejection.
