Protective Leadership is the third leadership mode in the High-Quality Team-Based Decision-Making model, the one that marks the decline side of the Lifecycle. Its formula is "efficient but not effective": the leader puts something else first, the core function, market share, status, or the status quo, rather than the enterprise, and protecting it becomes all-consuming. The signature is committee decision-making, slow deciding and slow doing. It buys stability at the cost of flexibility, and sits at the Treadmill stage.
