Alignment is the fourth Growth Imperative on the Scalability Matrix: the degree to which everyone in an organization, department, project, group, or team knows their common goals, understands them, agrees with them, and works effectively and efficiently toward them. Its power shows up when every non-trivial action and decision across the organization moves it closer to those goals. Les McKeown calls it the single greatest accelerator of progress to Predictable Success, and you cannot empower people before they are aligned.
