Mentoring and Coaching

Definition

The least you need to know

Mentoring and Coaching is the ability of an organization to develop its people and to capture and pass on institutional knowledge through one-on-one interactions, with the goal of Enterprise-Wide, High-Quality Team-Based Decision-Making. It keeps the knowledge people carry from walking out the door each evening. Coaching is functional and skills-based and works inside the chain of command; mentoring is attitudinal and behavioral and works best outside it, where people can experiment without fear or judgment. The labels can be swapped, so long as the two stay distinct.
